Buying and/or selling a home is a time when you may need to get a new insurance policy or at the very least update your existing insurance coverage.

Here are some tips from Team Weir and a local insurance guru to help with that process.

For your home - ensure you have all of the details on the dwelling such as: year built, square footage & all recent updates IE new roof shingles

Be aware of any higher hazard items such as: galvanized plumbing, aluminum or knob & tube wiring or potential vacancy.  We at Team Weir can help you with this.

Get a letter of experience/history from your last insurer for both your home and auto insurance

Obtaining letters of experience/history and a drivers abstract are especially important if moving to/from another province, as not all information is available to a local insurer.

Inquire about discounts for - mortgage free homes, being a non-smoker, multi-property, and multi-policy. Insuring your home and auto insurance with the same brokerage offers opportunity to save on both premiums.

Specialty property coverages: There are limits on certain higher-value items under a standard homeowners policy that may not be sufficient. Things like jewellery and watches, bicycles, musical instruments, watercraft, and business property often have a set limit, with the option to buy more coverage.

Be sure your policy has the right "water coverage". Finding out at the time of an occurrence can be very costly. IE a flooded basement due to a sump pump failure or a sewer backup.
